Health Benefits of Goji:
The Goji berry has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Modern science has confirmed what traditional doctors have experienced through trial and error. We only use the highest quality Goji berries grown in the pristine Heavenly Mountains of Western China for the production of our top quality Goji products.
Weight Loss:
A 2002 study at Huazhong Agricultural University in China demonstrated that Goji's master molecule polysaccharides enhanced the conversion of food into energy, and reduced body weight. Patients were given a tea made of goji berries each morning and each afternoon. Most patients lost significant weight.
In an animal study goji polysaccharides improved the conversion of food into energy and reduced body weight. The recommended dosage is 2 oz. twice a day.
Immune System Boost:
Over 40 years of research have proved Goji's ability to improve immunity. Goji acts as an adaptogen and thus improves low immune function. Goji can also help to normalize a hyperactive immune system.
Dr. Zhou Jinhuang pointed out in Recent Advances in Chinese Herbal Drugs that polysaccharides from Goji Berries improved cell-mediated and humoral immune responses.
LBP polysaccharides increased activity of the body's strongest disease-fighting immune cells (T-cells, natural killer cells and cytotoxic T-cells) in laboratory animals, even at a dose of 5-10 mg/kg a day for one week. This is the equivalent of 2-4 oz. of Goji juice.
One study was done with seniors in China. After taking Goji berries, lysozyme, IgG and IgA in serum increased in all participants. The activity of IL-2 increased by 2.26 times in 67% of all participants.
LBP enhances the T-cell immune response by increasing the number of E-receptors on the surface of T-cells or it increased the amount of T-cells directly. The recommended dosage is 2 oz. a day.
Allergies:
A study published in the Journal of the Beijing Medical University (1992) reported that Goji reduced antibodies associated with allergy-type reactions. This was presumably achieved by the mechanisms of promoting CD8(+) T-cells and regulating cytokines. The recommended dosage for this condition is 2 to 4 oz. a day. Because of this discovery, Goji has also been recommended for treatment of psoriasis.
The Goji berry is a beautiful fruit that grows in different areas of China and Mongolia.
Arthritis:
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is the body's strongest anti-inflammatory enzyme and under normal conditions keeps in check the free radical known as superoxide anion. During chronic and acute inflammation, superoxide anions are produced at a rate that overpowers the ability of the body's SOD enzyme defense system to remove these free radicals.
An important study in China found that regular intake of Goji resulted in a remarkable 40 percent increase of SOD. For all arthritic conditions research suggests a maintenance dosage of 2 ounces of premium quality Goji juice, two to three times per day at mealtime. During times of flare-ups the serving size may be doubled.
Diabetes:
Goji is critical to breaking the cycle of carbohydrate addiction and insulin resistance that leads to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases associated with this problem. The Goji berry is the greatest source of health-promoting nutrients for our cells. Goji has been used in China for treatment of adult-onset diabetes as it helps balance blood sugar and insulin response. The recommended dosage is 2 oz. twice a day.
Anti-Aging:
Goji contains a unique LBP polysaccharide complex, which is a strong secretagogue (a substance that stimulates the secretion of rejuvenative human growth hormones by the pituitary gland).
The Goji berry was administered to elderly people once a day for three weeks. Many beneficial results were recorded in all study groups. Almost 70% of patients experienced substantial increases in their immune defense systems. Activity of White cell interleukin-2 was doubled, while T-cell transformation functions rose threefold. Nearly all patients reported better quality of sleep, improved appetite and greater happiness.
In 1993, Zhang studied the Goji's unique LBP polysaccharides in fighting peroxidation, which is a cause of premature cell death. Dr. Zhang's team measured the changes in the electrical parameters of cell membranes after incubating living cells in a solution containing dangerous free radicals for six hours. Their finding was that the deadly effect of free radicals on cells can be reversed and prevented by incubation with LBP polysaccharides. The recommended dosage for this condition is 2 to 4 oz. a day.
Energy & Athletic performance:
In an animal study Goji's LBP polysaccharides triggered a remarkable increase in stamina and exercise tolerance. It also helped eliminate fatigue. Goji's LBP enhances glocogen storage, which is the body's best energy fuel.
Goji's LBP also helps with post-workout recovery by increasing activity of the lactic acid removing enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. This limits the occurrence of sore muscles. Goji's LBP also accelerates clearance of blood urea nitrogen, which is a toxin produced during workout. The recommended dosage is up to 5 oz. a day.
Building Blood:
A three-year study in China researched the effects of the Goji berry on the immune, biochemical and physiological indexes of the blood of elderly volunteers. The blood of these volunteers reverted to a markedly younger state.
Another study demonstrated that LBP facilitated stem cell proliferation and increased the amount of monocytes in bone marrow. LBP supports the conversion of the monocytes to matured leukocytes.
The berry has also been used in a number of recent clinical trials for treatment of bone marrow deficiency conditions. The recommended dosage is 2 oz. a day.
Preventing Cancer:
Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an important cytokine (cell protein) that induces strong antitumor responses in a variety of cancer models. Goji's polysaccharides are particularly effective in enhancing the production of IL-2. This was first reported in 1989 by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology in Beijing. IL-2 has been studied in the U.S.A. as an immune promoting factor with HIV infection and certain cancers.
According to other studies from China, the Goji berry inhibits the gene mutation induced by TA98 and TA 100. The scientific community increasingly promotes Goji as an effective method to prevent liver cancer.
The recommended dosage is 2 oz. a day.
Treating Cancer:
A clinical study in 1994 at Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China tested Goji's LBPs in combination with the drug LAK/IL-2 on 79 advanced cancer patients. The initial results found an outstanding regression of cancer in patients with malignant melanoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, malignant hydrothorax, renal cell carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. When patients were treated with both LAK/IL-2 plus Goji LBP, 40.9% responded favorably to the treatment. However, only 16.1 responded favorably when only LAK/IL-2 was used.
The remission of cancer lasted significantly longer for patients treated with LAK/IL-2 plus Goji LBP compared to those who were treated with only LAK/IL-2. These resulted showed that Goji berry polysaccharides can be used as an adjuvant in cancer therapy.
In another Chinese study LBP enhanced the immune system of cancer patients while increase the sensitivity to radiation therapy. The Goji berry triggered an increase in white blood cell count and lymphocyte transformation rate (both are measures of immune function).
LBP can inhibit the growth of human leukemia HL-60 cells and is also capable of prompting their death (apoptosis). The recommended dosage is 4 to 8 oz. a day.
Cardiovascular Health:
Blood contains the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD fights against the accumulation of lipid peroxides, which can lead to various heart diseases. Levels of SOD decrease as the body ages. In a clinical study, Goji berry consumption prompted a significant 40% rise in SOD levels and a corresponding 65% decline in lipid peroxides.
A different study showed that flavonoids present in Goji protected vital red blood cells. Huang Y et al investigated in 1999 how these flavonoids protect against lipid peroxidation in liver mitochondria and red blood cells of rats, which were given oxygen radicals. The mitochondria lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited by the total flavonoids of Lycium Barbarum (Goji). The fluidity of the mitochondria membrane was protected successfully. The shape of red blood cells remained intact for those which had Goji flavonoids added. However, the shape of red blood cells were significantly damaged by oxygen radicals without the presence of Goji flavonoids. The recommended dosage is 4 oz. a day.
Gastrointestinal disorders:
The Mongolian Institute of Traditional Medicine used Goji in the treatment of atrophic gastritis (weakened digestion due to reduced stomach activity). Patients achieved excellent results from taking 10 grams of the whole fruit three times a day before meals for two months. The recommended dosage is 3 oz. a day.
High Blood Pressure:
A study by Jia YX et al (1998) in China showed that the increase of blood pressure in hypertensive rats could be prevented significantly by the treatment with Goji LBP. The recommended dosage is 3 oz. a day.
Liver Protection:
The liver cells of rats were protected from the toxicity of carbon tetrachloride by a cerebroside that was isolated from the Goji berry. Kim SY et al reported in a 1999 study that the Lycium cerebrosides may preserve hepatic mitochondrial levels of glutathione by scavenging reactive oxygen species produced and there reduce lipid peroxidation and cellular damage. The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 oz. a day.
Periodontal Disease:
The effects of Goji on growth and attachment of human gingival fibroblasts to root surfaces in vitro were examined by Liu B (1992) at Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China. The results showed that LBP (goji polysaccharides), even at low doses, can improve growth and attachment of fibroblast on the planed diseased root surfaces to a certain extent. The results suggested that Goji probably improves the formation of new attachment of periodontal tissue. The recommended dosage is 1 oz as mouth rinse.
Sexual Dysfunction/Prostate Health:
Goji berries, when taken orally, have found to noticeable increase androgen levels in the blood, resulting in patients feeling more energetic. Goji berries are frequently used to treat sexual impotence. Goji berries are also known to enhance sexual vitality. Goji Juice has also been taken to improve urine flow and other prostate health issues. The recommended dosage is 3 to 4 oz. a day.
